But the real pearl of the Godfather tour is the Castle of slaves. Situated a few kilometres from the historic centre, this magnificent building dates back to the 18th century and is still today home to some of the original furniture and artefacts which tell the story of the noble family that once lived here. Savoca is a small medieval town which distinguishes itself for its antique charm and historic treasures, which have made it famous. Walking through the cobbled streets, you will be able to immerse yourself in its authentic atmosphere rich in history. The town offers spectacular views of the Ionian Sea, from the castle point you will see various valley’s and panoramic scenery. Keep walking through the cobbled streets and discover marvellous historic structures like the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, built in the 18th Century, home to alfrescos dating back to the 14th Century. The Mother Church, home to artistic and architectural treasures, this is where the practice of mummifying was adopted between 1726 and 1850. Within the centre of Savoca you will find various shops selling local products, art and ceramics as well as traditional delicacies.
Bar Vitelli and the Church of Santa Lucia are the two places where the Godfather trilogy fans will love to visit. It will take you back to the times of the mafia in the 40s. Bar Vitelli is a traditional bar situated in the main piazza of Savoca, within the internal section of the bar it has kept its original features utilised in the film. You will be able to sit at the table where Michael Corleone sat and relive the iconic scene from the film where a young Michael Corleone asks for Apollonia’s hand in marriage. The Church of Santa Lucia, situated in the vicinity of the Bar Vitelli, another film location of The Godfather. On the outside of the church you will remember the scene of the wedding celebration between Michael Corleone and Apollonia with its convoy of musicians and guests walking behind them toward the piazza of the first dance, one of the most famous scenes in the film. The Church with its stone and brick facade appear intact, just like in the film, it will be possible to relive the scenes where they were filmed.
The Castle of Slaves is situated in the commune of Fiumefreddo, Sicily. A memorable location from the famous film The Godfather and an integral part of the plot, utilised as a set for the arrival in Sicily of Michael Corleone, courting scenes between Apollonia and Michael and the tragic scene of the death of Apollonia in the courtyard of the villa. The Castle of slaves dates back to the 17th century and has been used as a Summer residence by a noble family from Catania with a Maltese background. Today the Baron Franco Platania in person opens the doors of the Castle to the public, offering its visitors the opportunity of immersing themselves in the story and unique atmosphere of the Godfather trilogy. At the inside of the castle, visitors can admire the charm of the noble rooms with antique furniture, the Sicilian terracotta paving its alfresco decorated walls and the dining room still decorated precisely as it was in the film.
Entrance fee to the Castle of Slaves is 30 Euro paid locally.
